Fendi presented the final collection designed by Karl Lagerfeld on February 21st during Milan Fashion Week. The emotion-filled show was a moving tribute to the visionary designer.  From the initial sketches for the collection to his ultimate Fendi gesture – the romantic trace of a silk foulard – the show celebrated Karl Lagerfeld’s passion for his craft.

“The bond between Karl Lagerfeld and FENDI is fashion’s longest love story, one that will continue to touch our lives for years to come. I am profoundly saddened by his passing and deeply touched by his constant care and perseverance until the very end. When we called just a few days before the show, his only thoughts were on the richness and beauty of the Collection. It’s a true testament to his character. He shall be so missed.”

With these emotion-filled words, Fendi Creative Director for Men’s Lines and Accessories paid a final tribute to Karl Lagerfeld, who had been creative director of the Maison since 1965. Fendi celebrated the designer throughout the presentation of his final collection in Milan. The Women’s Fall/Winter 2019/2020 collection reflected Karl Lagerfeld’s unwavering commitment to the Roman Maison for 54 years with silhouettes majestic in their simplicity parading on a catwalk decked out in the curling “KL” initials.

Like petals or plumes, wallpaper prints became textures on organza and satin, while high-buttoned pointed shirt collars recalled Karl Lagerfeld’s inimitable style. Designed in 1981, the “Karligraphy” FF logo appeared on cabochon buttons and intarsia fur. Under a projection of the inscription “Love Karl”, the show ended with a moving homage by Silvia Venturini Fendi, followed by a showing of portions from a documentary by Loïc Prigent entitled “Karl Lagerfeld Sketches His Life”, in which the designer recalled the clothes he wore on his first day at Fendi in 1965. Fifty-four years later, his magnificent and beautiful journey came to an end amidst heartfelt emotion. Merci, Monsieur Lagerfeld.
